The reason was simple. The Government thought that the site was sharing way too much copyrighted stuff and they went in and conquered.

Actually, they're back up under a different domain atm, at least that's what rumors are saying . They're working on building a court case to get back what they had before, but that can take who knows how long. Knowning the gov't they'll just say this is interfering with SOPA and your copyrighting your lawyers (who knows).

As for why they were shut down isn't because they were sharing illegal material, it was the fact that they were willingly putting this sort of information and files out for everyone to obtain. And they were even making incentives for people to get upload these files, such as spreading emails such as "Uploading xxxxxx documents on our site" or stuff like paying people for doing this kinds of stuff. It's a lot deeper then we perceive it, (from what I've read at least). It's going to be interesting, apparently The Pirate Bay is going to be next on the chopping block by the looks of it. But they put out a statement yesterday talking about how they aren't afraid of SOPA, they can't get rid of them. They'll just move to another domain like they've done many times before. Going to be an interesting few months...

Also whats ironic, they're putting a hold on any more SOPA actions for a bit (voting wise) because support is starting to waver in different directions... Ironically this happened a few hours AFTER megaupload was taken down... if only they had done it a few hours earlier.

Megaupload, we already know how little the gov't cares about peoples rights lol, they'll take you to court, pick some random civil court case from the renaissance and say AND THIS IS WHY YOU CAN'T CROSS THE STREET ON A GREEN LIGHT, then they'll take your house, money, family, and cut off both your feet as punishment, just cause they can.

Because they knowingly put servers on U.S. soil, which is a pretty big mistake for such a large file hosting service who promotes piracy acts.

What I never understood about people not wanting their things checked at airports, check points, etc etc. is Why are you so mad they're trying to keep you safe? What do you have to hide? If it's nothing, be calm and get it over with. But nope, people will cry and moan until an extremist group crashes a plane into a building. Then they're the first to point fingers at everyone who didn't beef up security. I'm not promoting SOPA or ACTA (whatever that is) just noticing a pattern everywhere that people are complaining even more about safety or privacy.

there's a difference between not wanting them to see our content and giving them full rights to do anything they want. a check up to a thousand dollars may hurt your wallet, but a blank check will be worse... especially if it doesn't necessarily need a dollar amount input and could ask for more.
